Zeiss LSM 910/990 Lightfield 4D workshop and launch

(Johannesburg, 10-13 November 2025 and Stellenbosch University, 17-20 November 2025)

During November, SABI together with Zeiss hosted the Zeiss LSM 910/990 (with Airyscan 2) launch and workshop, where Zeiss introduced their new Lightfield 4D technology. The workshop was first held in Johannesburg where scientists had the opportunity to see the capabilities of this new system, before it was moved to Stellenbosch University for the repeat of the workshop and launch.

The new Lightfield 4D enables you to acquire multiple fluorescence images in seconds, allowing users to rapidly screen samples and identify cells of interest for high-resolution Airyscan imaging. Where Lightfield 4D truly excels is in live-cell imaging, offering acquisition speeds of up to 80 volumes per second without time delay in 3D. Also attached to the Zeiss LSM 910 was Airyscan 2, that allows gentle super-resolution and high-speed acquisition of biological samples. This technology makes high resolution imaging available to everyone, from students new to microscopy to experienced imaging specialists. The images generated with the Airyscan 2 are just simply amazing.

During the workshops, we were unfortunately not able to test the full capabilities of the new Lightfield 4D system, as no live sample was available at the time. However, one can easily imagine the remarkable images it will produce and the exciting research questions it will help us answer.

Overall, participants enjoyed the presentations and hands-on demonstrations by Chris Power from Zeiss throughout the weeks. We at Stellenbosch University are delighted that the LSM 910 with Lightfield 4D and Airyscan 2 will remain with us for a few weeks, giving our researchers the opportunity to explore the system’s capabilities in more depth.
